In 2014, Nova Conservação (NC) and KBYO Biological (KBYO), a Spanish biotechnology company specialized in solutions for the conservation, architectural restoration and consolidation of stone materials, formalized a partnership for exclusive representation in Portugal, other Portuguese-speaking countries and Italy, of an innovative technology at the time – biomineralization. Biomineralization is a method that favors the precipitation of a natural "cement" by activated carbonatogenic bacteria, regenerating and strengthening deteriorated carbonate substrates.
The so-called Granada Method (patented by the University of Granada) allows activating the metabolism of the aforementioned bacteria existing in the substrates through the application of Myxostone-M3P®, a sterile nutrient solution, produced and marketed by KBYO.
Over these past 10 years, NC has applied this system whenever there was a client interested in a compatible and sustainable conservation of architectural heritage built in natural or artificial stone; the implementation of this system had the scientific support from LNEC.
In Portugal we used this method in the Basilica of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, in Igreja do Convento do Carmo (Lisbon) and in Igreja Matriz de Loulé, among others; and in Italy, as a result of a protocol celebrated with the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro, biomineralization tests were carried out in the Vatican and in Matera, with monitoring and analysis of the results by our team; in 2020, NC applied the system in a pilot area of the Arco de Settimio Severo (Roman Forum).
Due to the good results obtained, NC was invited to carry out tests in the Hili Archaeological Park, on ancient earth structures; this work was supervised by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.
After 10 years of an exceptional partnership with KBYO, and having largely demonstrated the effectiveness, compatibility and sustainability of biomineralization in the most diverse stone substrates, NC decided to waive the exclusive distribution of Myxostone-M3P®, hoping that this decision will contribute to a wider use of this system – the only one available on the market whose compatibility with heritage stones is scientifically demonstrated.
Therefore, from 2024 onwards, everyone interested in purchasing Myxostone-M3P® must contact the company CHEMICAL ADVANCED & KBYO BIOLOGICAL directly.
We will, of course, continue to promote biomineralization using the Granada Method, perhaps the greatest advance in recent decades for the delicate problem of consolidating very fragile limestones; We will also continue to apply it whenever the Client is willing to benefit from it.
A nuestros amigos de KBYO Biological, nuestro más cordial saludo y mejores deseos de éxito - y a Pepe Cabello un fuerte abrazo amistoso.
